<div style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: MiloSerifPro, Palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: MiloSerifPro, Palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;">
A lot of progress has been made in the fight against AIDS. Deaths peaked in 2005, at around 2m people. By 2015 that number had fallen to 1.1m. One big reason is that, of the 36.7m people currently infected with HIV, 18.2m are taking antiretroviral drugs that can hold the virus back for decades. Their number has risen more than twentyfold since the turn of the century.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: MiloSerifPro, Palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;">
But not all the statistics are so encouraging. Around 1.9m adults contracted HIV in 2015. That number has hardly budged since 2010. The great bulk of those infections, about 1.3m in 2015, happen in sub-Saharan Africa. They happen more often to women than to men: 58% of HIV-infected people in the region are female. Women between 15 and 24 are infected at almost eight times the rate of men of the same age.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: MiloSerifPro, Palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;">
There are several reasons why women contract HIV more often than men. Some are biological: women have a higher chance of contracting HIV from a given act of unprotected sex than men do. But cultural factors matter too, especially in poor countries. As in other aspects of society, it is often men who call the shots in the bedroom. Even if a woman wants a sexual partner to use a condom, she may struggle to convince him to do so.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: MiloSerifPro, Palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;">
On May 3rd, a charity called the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) announced a clinical trial that it hopes could help the situation. It has developed a small silicone ring designed to be inserted into the vagina, from where, for the next three months, it releases steady doses of dapivirine and levonorgestrel. The first of those is an anti-HIV drug. The second is a contraceptive.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: MiloSerifPro, Palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;">
IPM’s device builds on a previous model that contains only dapivirine. Two big clinical trials of that device concluded in 2016 and showed it could reduce the risk of catching HIV by about a third. That may not sound particularly impressive. But Zeda Rosenberg, IPM’s founder, says this number almost certainly represents only a floor on the treatment’s effectiveness. “We know from the trial results that not all the women used the ring consistently,” she says. Those that did will, she thinks, have enjoyed substantially better protection.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: MiloSerifPro, Palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;">
Combining an anti-HIV drug with a contraceptive may give women a reason to use the product more faithfully. Dr Rosenberg points out that in societies that expect women to be demure or chaste, those who take steps to protect themselves from HIV can often face stigma, since others may assume they are engaging in risky behaviour. But no such stigma applies to contraception. In any case, the ring is small and unobtrusive enough that women can wear it without their partners’ knowledge.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: MiloSerifPro, Palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;">
The first trial is designed only to demonstrate that the ring is safe, and will be conducted in America. Later tests will check how well it works, though the fact that the dapivirine-only ring has already passed similar tests should speed that process. IPM hopes to have the first batch of dual-purpose rings ready for shipping by 2020. If there is demand, it might even offer the rings for sale in the rich world, in the hope that the cash so generated could cross-subsidise production for poor countries where the need is greatest.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The O-R3, an autonomous robot created by Otsaw Digital, has a drone that can be launched after intruders.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The O-R3 is powered by data to make all of this possible. Otsaw says that it's employing machine learning in its systems, so that its robots can differentiate between whether a person is a regular visitor, an employee, or an intruder.<br />Aside from its in-built drone, the O-R3 is also able to do things like recognize intruders, as well as suspicious objects like unattended bags. It's also able to send alarm to a forward command center, where security will be activated. And if that wasn't enough, the O-R3 can charge itself when its battery goes flat.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"The more data we feed the robot, the more it learns," Ling said. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"For a start, we will look at quite basic stuff ... if a bag is unattended for five minutes it triggers an alarm. We can classify who is an employee, who is an intruder," he added. "There will be false positives [but] as the machine learns, it gets sharper.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
The company is set to unveil an outdoor version of the O-R3 during CommunicAsia2017, which takes place from Tuesday to Thursday. The outdoor version, with a range of 5km (3 miles) will be the size of a golf buggy, Otsaw said, and an indoor version — a smaller robot, without 3D LIDAR sensors and the drone — is in the works.</div>
<br /><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">Security robots aren't a new invention — they've been used for autonomous patrols in places everywhere, from</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;"> </span><span style="color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">company campuses in Silicon Valley</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">to</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;"> </span><span style="color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">train terminals in China</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">.</span><div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">Still, they're rising in popularity, especially in countries where it's getting more expensive to hire a security guard.</span><div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Companies in Singapore can spend up to S$8,000 ($5,763) a month for two security guards covering 12-hour shifts. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Otsaw wants to rent these robots out as a service — it's planning to lease the robot for $10,000 per month. Another local security services company, Ademco, is offering their robots at S$7,500 ($5,403) a month.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
But that doesn't mean the robots will replace humans. Ling, Otsaw's CEO, believes that humans will eventually have to move on to work that requires higher skill-sets.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"I definitely feel like humans cannot be replaced," he said. "The robots are just here to complement the humans, but humans should do something more ... of [higher] skills."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
Still, Otsaw is planning to build other autonomous robots — like autonomous road-sweepers — with cheaper LIDAR technology. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">
"Low-level jobs can be replaced in a very near future, if I might say, the next six months," Ling told <em>Mashable</em>. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em;">

A strange goat with one large eye in the middle of its forehead was born in a village in Assam, India, on May 10.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-top: 16px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif; font-size: 17px; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">The goat’s condition, called </span>cyclopia<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif; font-size: 17px; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">, is characterized by the developing brain’s failure to separate into two hemispheres. As a result, the skull only forms a single eye socket.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-top: 16px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Other defects usually accompany cyclopia. The young goat has only one complete ear, lacks a true nose, eyelids and eyelashes, and has jaws that are unusually small and missing teeth, causing the tongue  which is a normal size  to stick out on one side.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-top: 16px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The term "Cyclops" originated with the Greek "Kuklōps," which means "round-eyed," and referred to a mythological race of one-eyed giants sired by the Greek ocean god Poseidon. Fossil discoveries of dwarf elephant skulls may have fueled myths of the monstrous Cyclops — the large nasal opening in the center of the pachyderm's skull could have been interpreted as the cavity for one enormous eye, the American Museum of Natural History explained on its website for the exhibit "Mythic Creatures."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-top: 16px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Another goat with cyclopia ― that lived only 10 hours after birth ― was analyzed by scientists in a study published in 2014, in the Alexandria Journal of Veterinary Sciences. Researchers scanned the goat's head with computer X-ray tomography (CT) and conducted a necroscopy (animal autopsy). Like the goat born a few days ago, it had reduced and malformed jaws, and no nose, eyelids, eyelashes or upper teeth. The orbital opening, which held a single eyeball, measured about 1.2 inches (3 centimeters) in diameter.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-top: 16px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It is unclear what causes cyclopia, though scientists have suggested it may be linked to toxins produced naturally by pregnant mothers, according to a study published in 1998 in the journal Science. Excessive leves of the toxins inhibit cholesterol's movement within a developing embryo, disrupting a signal that shapes a number of body parts in a growing fetus, including its face and brain, the study authors wrote.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-top: 16px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Though rare, cyclopia has been reported in a variety of embryonic and newborn animals, including buffalo, cows, goats, sheep, deer and even humans, according to a study published in 2015 in the journal Clinical Medical Insights: Pediatrics.    </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-top: 16px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In humans, cyclopia affects an average of one in every 100,000 births, the study authors reported. In all species, those born with these severe defects typically don't survive for long. The researchers of the 2015 study described the condition as "incompatible with life."</div>
